Informed Delivery from the U.S. Postal Service® has revolutionized the way America checks their mail. Launched nationwide just last year, Informed Delivery is a service that allows residential users to view letter-sized mail before it arrives via email, track and change delivery instructions for packages and larger items, and receive automatic notifications about incoming mail delivery.

With millions of program subscribers, Informed Delivery has made a large impact on mail delivery in the U.S., changing the landscape of the postal industry. Below, we break down what you need to know, including how to sign up for Informed Delivery and frequently asked questions, so you can make an informed decision when enrolling in this program.

Signing Up for Informed Delivery

According to the USPS Informed Delivery website, your ability to sign up for Informed Delivery is dependent on living in a ZIP Code™ that participates in the program and having the ability to verify your identity. To sign up, follow these instructions:

  1. Go to informeddelivery.usps.com.
  2. Click on “Sign Up for Free” or “Sign In,” if you already have a personal USPS account.
  3. Once signed in, go to My Preferences. Under Account Management, click the box for Informed Delivery.
    1. Please note: If you do not see Informed Delivery in My Preferences, it is
      likely that Informed Delivery is not available at your address. Please check
      if Informed Delivery has reached your area by using the ZIP Code lookup
      tool on the USPS website.
  4. Opt-in to Informed Delivery by selecting the checkbox, and confirm your address.
  5. Complete the identity verification process by answering multiple choice questions about locations you’ve previously lived, loans, and other personal information.
  6. Click the blue “Informed Delivery” button to continue to your dashboard.

Q: What is the cost for Informed Delivery?
A: Informed Delivery is free for USPS customers and carries no additional charge for Mail Service Providers (MSPs).

Q: How do I use Informed Delivery?
A: You can view your mailpieces in a daily email, on your online dashboard at informeddelivery.usps.com, or via the USPS mobile app, available for both Apple and Android devices. The online dashboard for Informed Delivery is the most comprehensive, as you’re able to view the current day, plus the previous six days of letter-sized mail and packages.

Q: Can the digital content be personalized?
A: By default, images of the mailpieces are grayscale. However, colored images of mailpieces can be provided by individual companies. Colored images will also show up at the top of the email for consumers.

Q: Is Informed Delivery available for businesses?
A: Informed Delivery currently only provides residents their mail notifications, and is not available for commercial usage.

Q: Can I see package information in my Informed Delivery emails?
A: Yes, but package information will be displayed as status updates and tracking information, not scanned images.

Q: Is Informed Delivery available for P.O. Boxes?
A: Yes, just like residential addresses, Informed Delivery is available to consumers that have a P.O. Box™ in an eligible ZIP Code location.
